How to read a VA decision letter
A VA decision letter usually lists the issues VA decided, the evidence VA reviewed, the decision for each issue, the reasons for that decision, any disability evaluation assigned, and the effective date of award. The same letter can grant one issue, deny another, and defer another, so each issue needs to be read separately.
When you select a file, this tool reads selectable PDF or text content in your browser. It does not upload the file, store the extracted text, or send the letter to an AI service. The results focus on the standard decision-review choices: a Supplemental Claim when there is new and relevant evidence, a Higher-Level Review when the existing record may show an error or difference of opinion, a Board Appeal when a Veterans Law Judge should review the issue, and the separate Court Appeal path after a Board decision.
What this tool does not decide
It does not choose a legal strategy, decide whether evidence is strong enough, determine whether a rating should be higher, or tell you which form to file for a specific claim. VA deadlines and effective-date protection can turn on details in the letter and claim history. If the deadline is close or the claim is valuable, discuss the letter with an accredited representative.
